I want you woven into a tapestry of love—knit together by strong ties of love
One translation renders this and being “welded together.” This is interesting because when you weld to pieces of metal together, they actually melt into each other and the bond between them becomes stronger than the original pieces on their own. What this is telling us is that when you are tied to other brothers and sisters, there is safety, enrichment, security . . .
I want you woven into a tapestry of love—knit together by strong ties of love [or welded together] . . . in touch with everything there is to know of God.
As we hang-out with other believers, our knowledge and understanding of God increases!
Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God’s great mystery . . . complete understanding of God’s secret plan, which is Christ himself. All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else—in him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge . . .
Oh yes, God’s ways are higher than our ways. Do you remember what YHWH said through Isaiah? “’For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’” (Isaiah 55:8-9). I bet you never had any doubts about that, did you?
The problem is, everyone loves to quote that scripture . . . but read the rest of the context . . .
“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”(Isaiah 55:10-11)
Did you catch that? The rain falls from the sky and plants drink it up. They grow and become beautiful and strong. That is the way the Word of God works. So, yes, His ways, His thoughts, are way beyond our own . . . but if we quit reading there, we miss the whole point of Isaiah’s prophecy! Your thoughts don’t match those of God’s, so He sent his Word to bring your thoughts in line with His thoughts. Do you want to bring your thinking up to level of God’s? Meditate on His Word!
Look at what Paul is saying here in Colossians:
“ All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else—in him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge . . .”
Yes Paul, we know that . . .
“And we have been shown the mystery!!!!”
What? We have been shown that mystery? But I thought His thoughts and His ways were higher and beyond our grasp? Yes they were beyond our grasp—but not any more! Paul told the Corinthian church, “We [Those of us who have surrendered their own desires—even their own lives] have the mind of Christ and hold the thoughts, feelings and purposes of His heart.” (I Corinthians 2:16). My golly, Goober, quite looking everywhere else—you won’t find it in a bottle of booze, you won’t find it in your job, you won’t find it in an adulterous relationships, you won’t find it anywhere else—but in Christ!!!
Alright Paul, so why are you telling us all this?
I’m telling you this because I don’t want anyone leading you off some wild-goose chase, after other so-called mysteries, or ‘the Secret.’ —so no one will be able to deceive you with persuasive arguments . . .
Beware of anyone telling about a “new” revelation or insight; a “new” doctrine; “new” understanding given to them. I am always hearing some person proclaiming how they were given some special revelations, a special gift. When you hear that, run as far away from them as possible! Everything we need to live life, is in Jesus!
Then he says,
My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you have been given! You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him—Just as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, go on living in him: in simple faith
This is not rocket science; this is not complex or confusing . . .
regulate your lives and conduct yourselves in union with and conformity to him . . .
You have what it takes, now live it out, let it show.
